Thank you for taking the time to read our page for TeamZachATTACK!

Our son, Zachary was diagnosed with severe hemophilia A at 15-months-old after he suffered a substantial brain bleed.  After feeling under the weather for a day or two, Zach had a seizure and I immediatey called 911.  We were taken to Overlake Hospital where the discovered the large subdural hematoma.

From Overlake, they rushed us to Harborview in Seattle.  For over 24 hours Zach continued to have seizures and we were interviewed to determine if child abuse was the cause of the brain bleed.  Fortunately, they discovered the cause of the bleeding was hemophilia and not abuse. Hemophilia is a genetic disorder caused by missing or deficient Factor 8, a protein necessary for clotting.

After 3 days at Harborview we were transfered to Seattle Children's Hospital where we stayed for 2 weeks.  While at Children's Zach got his new port placed so Rian and I can give him the necessary infusions at home and we learned about our new normal. Most importantly, we were also introduced to the Bleeding Disorder Foundation of WA.

The staff at the BDFW reached out while we were still admitted and had us in contact with other families with hemophilia and had us registered for the next hemophilia camp almost immediately.  The support and love shown by the BDFW has been overwhelming.  The BDFW has been there to guide us through the insurance chaos and financial challenges of having one of the most expensive health issues out there. At $1,000 per day (for just Zach's medicine) being taught how to manuever the benefits, financial aid and co-pay world while dealing with a brand new diagnosis was life-changing. I can't adequately describe the impact the BDFW had on our first year of diagnosis and they continue to support us as we walk this path. Our Hemo Family has shown us that beyond the needles and infusions and ER trips is a world of hope and love and opportunity.  Everyone has their own story, hemophilia is just part of ours.

It is The Yena Family's responsibility and joy to help the BDFW support other families. We do that through awareness and money.  The annual Bloody Fun Run raises nearly half of our annual budget and that money goes directly to helping other families affected by bleeding disorders - advocating for us in Olympia and Washington DC, funding camps (where Zach goes every year), and so much more.

We would love to have you walk with us, and we are so grateful for any donation!  It costs about $1,000 to send one kid to camp so really, every $5 or $10 adds up quickly and makes such a difference!!

Thank you to all our family and friends who continue to support us. We appreciate you.

Love,
Rian, Allison and Zach
